Basel defender Omar Gaber proved his worth in Egypt's right-back slot with two solid displays against Nigeria home and away in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

A defensively assured full-back, rightly timing his tackles and capable of intercepting the ball in a timely manner, Gaber demonstrated his ability to defend Egypt's right flank against the Super Eagles' dangerous wingers.

In an attacking sense, the pacey Gaber is quite capable of overlapping on the outside to stretch the play, giving winger AS Roma winger Salah the freedom to drift inside onto his stronger left foot.

With two speedsters in Salah and Gaber occupying the same side, Egypt's right flank should be a source of headache to opponents who would now need to cope with the sheer pace of the duo.

The 24-year-old Gaber, however, is not likely to retain his place in manager Cuper's starting line-up following the excellent display of veteran Ahmed Fathi in the 2-0 home victory over Ghana in the World Cup qualifiers.

The availability of the 32-year-old Fathi, who helped Egypt to three consecutive Nations Cup titles under ex-coach Hassan Shehata, means he is always expected to get the nod ahead of Gaber due to his vast experience in that position.

And with Gaber not a regular for Swiss champions Basel as well, having only featured in seven out of 18 league games so far, his status as a starter for Egypt looks undermined.

The ex-Zamalek defender, however, remains a reliable understudy and boasts the pace lacking in the ageing Fathi – providing manager Cuper with more than one option in the right-back slot.
