The Ahly centre-back staked a late claim for a place in Egypt's squad and was rewarded for a string of solid displays with his club at the end of last season.

His ability to also operate as a left-back, the position he used to occupy at former club Smouha, was decisive in prompting coach Hector Cuper to call him up for the World Cup.

With Mohamed Abdel-Shafi being the only natural left back at the disposal of Cuper, Ashraf is expected to act as a back-up.

Ashraf joined Ahly last summer from Smouha and benefited from the lengthy absence of central defender Rami Rabia to take his place in the team's starting XI.

He made his international debut against Greece in a World Cup warm-up last March.

Ashraf scored a late equaliser in Egypt's 1-1 draw at Kuwait last month after coming on as a second-half substitute.
