This is the third successive tournament that Ibenge takes charge of, having led the Leopards to third place at the 2015 finals and a quarter-final berth in 2017. The 57-year-old is Congolese born but grew up in France and played lower league football in Belgium, France and Germany.

He doubles up the national team job with being in charge of Kinshasa’s AS Vita Club, who he led to the 2014 African Champions League final.

Key player: Yannick Bolasie. Age: 30. Winger.

The club career of the mercurial Bolasie might be in freefall but he is a key element for the Congolese side as he heads to a second Cup of Nations tournament, having previously starred in 2015. He is set to leave Everton after being loaned out to Anderlecht in Belgium for the first five months of the year.

He was sidelined for a year after surgery on his right knee, hurt in a challenge when playing against Manchester United in 2016.
