Islamist party demands clear-cut timetable for parliamentary, presidential polls

Egypt’s Islamist-leaning Freedom and Justice Party issued a statement on Thursday demanding that the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issue a clear timeline for democratic transition in Egypt.

The party, the political arm of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood movement, called for a timeline detailing all stages of upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, along with proposed plans to draft a new constitution.

“Protesting no longer represents the best means of achieving the demands of the people,” the party declared, going on to urge followers to expand their political activism to encompass both civil society and university campuses.

The party also blasted the delay in handing political power over to an elected civil authority, calling for national elections to be held as soon as possible.
