Nigeria won the 17th title
Nigeria youth team are delighted after being crowned African youth champions a record sixth time Sunday after a thrilling 3-2 extra-time triumph over Cameroon.
“Beating Cameroon is a very big achievement as we had not beaten them for three years now. Today God was with us and we won,” Coach John Obuh was quoted as saying on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) official website.
“I dedicate the trophy to our newly elected President, Goodluck Jonathan the president of the Federal republic of Nigeria,” Obuh added.
The Flying Eagles are heading to South Korea for a friendly tournament before they start their proportional campaign for the World Cup.
“Between Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be going to South Korea for a tournament. When we come back we will then sit and do further preparation for World Cup,” Obuh added.
Cameroon Captain, Mvom Mbeyo’o expressed that their opponents earned the victory with a determined and elaborate performance that caused Cameroon to make many individual mistakes.
“Nigeria was better organised than in the group phase and I have the conviction that they were more determined than us,” MM quoted as saying on CAF's website.
“We are having a very bad moment now but we will not let that trouble us. We leave with heads high despite this defeat and look forward to the World Cup,” Mbeyo’o summed up.
