French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday urged "all countries concerned", including those not in the coalition fighting the Islamic State group, to provide weapons to those battling the jihadists, notably in Kobane.

"I am launching an appeal here, beyond the coalition, to all countries concerned to give this opposition the support they expect from us, the means they need to fight against terrorism," Hollande said.

The French president cited the example of Kobane, the flashpoint town on the border of Turkey and Syria that Islamic State fighters are battling to take, as a "martyred town" and the "symbol" of the combat against the group.
