The seventh anuual Panorama of the European Film, one of Cairo film-goers most highly anticipated annual events, is set to take place between 19 and 29 November in Zawya independent cinema downtown and Galaxy cinema in Manial.
Misr International Film (MIF), founders of both Panorama and Zawya, will hold a press conference at Zawya at 7pm on 5 November to announce the opening film along with the rest of the programme.
Panorama was founded by MIF's managing partner as well as director and producer Marianne Khoury in 2004 and has since immersed Cairo in a wide selection of award-winning European and Arabic feature films, documentaries, and classics.
The films are divided into several sub-sections: European Cinema (including feature films and award-winning productions which screened at European festivals this past year), Emerging Directors (showcasing films by young, up and coming European directors), Documentary Rendezvous (including documentaries which made festival runs this year), Swiss Documentary Cinema (each year the Panorama gives special focus to a certain country or European region) and a special retrospective for acclaimed German director Wim Wenders.
The seventh Panorama also features a new sub-section dubbed "Carte Blanche" which will be curated according to the preference of Egyptian filmmakers Yousry Nasrallah, Nadine Khan and Ahmad Abdalla.
This year the Panorama will showcase around 40 films in the two theatres.
Special events will happen around the packed screenings schedule, including Q&As and roundtable discussions with directors and filmmakers from Egypt and Europe.
The Panorama will also continue its “Education and Cinema” segment which invites students from across Cairo to the morning shows of the cinema to hold discussions that use film as a platform for debate and critical thinking.
