Victims of the accident late Saturday include close family members

Fourteen people were killed and two injured in a road accident in Upper Egypt's Minya late Saturday night, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

All victims were local residents of villages in Minya governorate. Among those killed are a man and his wife, and two men and their brothers, including one whose son also died with him.

The incident occurred when a microbus crashed with a lorry on the Minya ring road.

Road accidents are recurrent throughout Egypt due to poor road maintenance and loosely implemented traffic laws.

Upper Egypt has a large share of incidents, with several reports of deadly accidents recorded recently.

On Thursday, 12 people were killed and three injured in an accident on the highway connecting the southern governorates of Beni Suef and Minya. Earlier this month, 14 university students lost their lives in a crash in Sohag.

Egypt loses around 12,000 lives to road accidents every year, according to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
