Mahmoud Rihan was arrested in November

A workers activist has been acquitted Thursday of accusations of insulting the president.

Mahmoud Rihan, Vvce president of the independent syndicate for workers at the Cairo Airport Company, was arrested in November from his workplace and detained pending investigations.

He was reportedly questioned over his Facebook posts and faced accusations of insulting President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and revealing secrets "harmful to national security."

A Cairo misdemeanour court acquitted and released Rihan on Thursday.

Several independent syndicates and groups dedicated to workers rights had criticised Rihan's arrest and called for his release. Among them were the Revolutionary Socialists and the workers committee in the liberal Constitution Party.
