Amreeka follows a good-hearted Muna as she journeys from Bethlehem in the West Bank to a small town in Illinois with her adolescent son Fadi.

The film, Cherien Dabis first long feature, is a humorous drama that explores displacement and finding one's identity amid American xenophobia. 

After they both win the green card in a lottery, Muna seizes the opportunity to move her only boy away from the hardships posed by the occupation, despite the struggle she endures as she parts with her home. Through Fadi, viewers are invited into the world of being an adolescent immigrant caught between your own culture and the difficulties posed by a new home. 

In 2009, Amreeka won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes and the Best Arabic Film at the Cairo International Film Festival. It was nominated for the top award at Dubai International Film Festival.
