Still from Searching for Sugar Man
The 2012 Swedish-British documentary film, directed and written by Malik Bendjelloul, is the story of the search for the great Sixto Rodriguez. The film will be screened on 5 May at DARB 1718.
As a musician in the 1960s, Rodriguez recorded two studio albums and having found no recognition in the US, disappears and continues a quiet life of obscurity. A bootleg copy of his album finds its way to South Africa during Apartheid where his music becomes a local phenomenon. It isn’t until the late 1990s that two fans, Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom, decided to investigate the rumoured death of the American musician and his life story, only to find themselves in a surprising twist of events.
Before the film’s director committed suicide, the film went on to win a series of awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and receive international acclaim.
