Egypt's general prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, ordered Wednesday in commemoration of Sinai Liberation Day the release of 174 students and prisoners with critical medical conditions who have been in jail pending trials.
The General Prosecution statement, however, did not specify the nature of the charges the prisoners are facing.
25 April marks the 1982 withdrawal of Israeli forces from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, until then occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War.
Hundreds of students were rounded up during confrontations between supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and police last year.
Many were reportedly arrested randomly as police upped their crackdown on dissent following the ejection of the Muslim Brotherhood from power in 2013.
Egypt's general prosecutor released hundreds of imprisoned students in December and March, citing concern for their academic futures.
