الجار جار وإن جار
El gar gar we en gar
Translation: A neighbour remains a neighbour even if he is unfair.
Meaning: Your neighbours practically family, so you must make allowance for their faults. In the close-knit neighbourhoods of small towns and even in Egypt's big cities well into the 1960s, neighbours spent considerable time together or watching out for each other - hence the need to make peace and show kindness.
