Egyptian short film Tarot will be screened at the Cannes film festival in France later this month.

Tarot, by Ahmed Roshdy, was chosen from among 4,500 submissions as one of the winners of the 48 Hour Film Project, known as 48HFP, a film festival that gives filmmakers 48 hours to write, shoot and edit the film.

The filmmakers are given a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, and are expected to deliver a film with a duration of between 4 and 7 minutes.

Tarot is a 7-minute long animated fiction comedy that looks at the life of a poor fisherman.

"The fisherman struggles to support his family, he goes on a ship for a long fishing trip with only a deck of playing cards in his pocket. Unexpected events happens once he is on the ship," according to the Cannes website.

Since its founding back in 2001, the winning films of 48HFP have been screened at Cannes.

This year, films from Lebanon, Mexico, the United States, Belgium, Bolivia, France, Netherlands, Finland, Japan and Egypt made it to the final screening at Cannes to take place on 20 May.

Released in June 2014, Tarot won nine awards in Egypt. Most recently, on 7 May it took part in the Cairo French Institute's film festival Rencontres de l'Image. Earlier this year, Tarot was screened at the Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre as part of the international and final contest for the 48HFP.
