By the early 1960s, two iconic filmmakers, Agnès Varda and Jacques Demy, made an important imprint on cinema with what soon became known as the French New Wave.

From their marriage in 1962 until Demy passed away in 1990, the two filmmakers developed a unique universe of their own.

Cairo’s cinema-lovers will be able to see some of their iconic works on the big screen this month at the French Institute in Cairo.

The screenings start with Varda's 1962 comedy Cléo de 5 à 7 (“Cleo from 5 to 7”), and will include Demy's Lola (1961) and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (“The Young Girls of Rochefort”) from 1967, all the way to Varda's 2008 autobiographical documentary Les Plages d'Agnès (“The Beaches of Agnes”) in which she narrates story of her life, career and relationship with Demy.

The final day will also include a special screening of Dawn in the presence of the director, Nadine Salib.

All screenings begin at 7pm at the French Institute in Mounira, Cairo.
