Earlier in May, an explosion damaged the façade of another church in the same governorate

Unknown assailants opened gunfire on an Evangelical church in Egypt’s Fayoum governorate early on Sunday, the Ahram Arabic news website has reported.

No casualties were reported.

The attackers shot at the church in the town of Senoures in central Egypt, and exchanged fire with guards outside, before reportedly escaping on a motorcycle.

Investigations into the attack are underway.

Earlier in May, an improvised bomb exploded outside the walls of the Mar Girgis Church in Tamya, also in Fayoum, causing no injuries but damaging part of the building's façade.

Similar attacks have also occurred in other parts of Egypt.

On 13 April, two bombs detonated in Zagazig city in the Nile Delta governorate of Sharqiya, including one in front of a church, but left no casualties.

On 6 April, a policeman and four civilians were injured in a shooting outside Archangel Raphael Church in Al-Agamy, in west Alexandria.

Since the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, anti-government Islamist militants have staged bomb attacks and shootings, mainly against police and army personnel.

Several attacks have also been carried out near courts, or judges’ private residences or vehicles.

In response, the government has arrested thousands in its crackdown on suspected Islamists.
