In their latest music video, Egypt's popular band Cairokee choose animation to reinforce social critique in a song of man-meets-woman at a party.  

In Marbout Be Astek (Tied in an Elastic), the lead singer recounts seeing a girl arrive at a nightclub, effortlessly beautiful, her hair "tied in an elastic, in the midst of people who are plastic".

The video begins with band members brainstorming ideas for their next video in what is supposed to be a candid, funny scene, and then morphs into a comic-book-like nightclub that boasts human/animal courtships, grotesquely lavish partying, and hyenas in dress shirts licking the cats next to them.

Men are represented as hyenas – except for the song's first person narrator, who appears as a large fluffy cat – while women have cat ears and whiskers, in a scene that narrows in on the self-destructive acts of the exuberantly wealthy and society’s animalistic (pun intended) reactions to women.

Since its release on YouTube on 7 May, the music video has been viewed almost half a million times.

Founded in 2003, Cairokee rose to prominence in 2011 after their hit single Sowt El Horriya (The Voice of Freedom) -- written during the first 18 days of the revolution and released before former president Hosni Mubarak stepped down -- took the country by storm.
