Egypt’s naval forces foiled early Wednesday an attempt of 78 people to cross the Mediterranean Sea towards Italy in a fishing boat, Egyptian armed forces spokesperson Mohamed Samir announced.

In a statement issued on his official Facebook page early Thursday , Samir stated that a navy patrol found the fishing boat near the coast of Alexandria governorate carrying 78 people of different nationalities on their way to Italy as illegal migrants.

The 78 passengers and the crew were transferred to detained at Ras El-Tin naval base where they received medical care, Samir said.

Hundreds of Egyptians, as well as others of varied nationalities, have been caught in similar attempts to migrate to Italy over the past few years in search of better work opportunities or fleeing from danger. A number have drowned in the process.
