A security officer and low ranking officer were injured Tuesday when an IED (improvised explosive device) detonated in North Sinai, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported.

According to security sources in North Sinai , the IED detonated when a security forces armoured vehicle was sweeping South Sheikh Zuwaid district.

A 30-year-old officer and a 27-year-old major were injured in the explosion and transferred to Al-Arish Military Hospital to receive treatment.

Egypt's army is currently fighting a campaign against a decade-long militant insurgency in North Sinai.

Militants have killed hundreds of police and army personnel in the past year and a half in North Sinai, while the authorities have announced that hundreds of militants have been killed in military campaigns in the governorate.

The Islamist group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, recently renamed Sinai Province and affiliated to the Islamic State group, has claimed responsibility for most attacks against security forces in Sinai.
