Hundreds of low ranking policemen went on strike Saturday in the Nile Delta’s Sharqiya governorate to demand better working conditions, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
The protesting police are demanding financial incentives for the months of June and July, along with being provided treatment in police hospitals, a health service currently exclusive to police officers.
The protesters have closed several police stations causing a complete service halt in many parts of the third most populous governorate in Egypt.
Since 2011, low-ranking officers have held frequent demonstrations to protest deteriorating working conditions, low salaries, and a lack of safety.
In February 2014, the low-ranking officers protested in Alexandria and Kafr El-Sheikh to demand higher wages and better working conditions despite a protest law in Egypt passed in December 2013 that bans all protests not pre-approved by authorities.
