Five people have been injured after an IED exploded near an armoured vehicle in North Sinai.

The bombing took place on a coastal highway in the North Sinai provincial capital of El-Arish in the early hours of Tuesday, eyewitnesses told Ahram Arabic news website.

Four civilians and a police conscript were injured in the attack. No deaths have been reported.

The northern part of the Sinai Peninsula has been the epicentre of a 10-year-old brazen Islamist insurgency, which has spiked since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

The assaults by radical militants have targeted security forces in Sinai but have also hit police and army personnel on the mainland.

The attacks on security forces have been spearheaded by Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group last year.

Three policemen were killed on Monday and at least 27 wounded when a roadside bomb targeted a bus carrying conscripts in the Nile Delta governorate of Beheira.

Last week, a massive car bomb exploded near a national security building in a densely populated residential neighbourhood, wounding 29 but leaving no casualties. The bombing was also claimed by Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis.
