Saudi military spokesman General Ahmed Asiri dismissed on Friday reports that Egyptian and Sudanese ground troops have been deployed in Yemen.

In an interview with Saudi state TV, Asiri criticised media reports claiming that Egypt has recently sent 800 ground troops to Yemen on Tuesday, describing the reports as "inaccurate".

"If there were any of those troops [Egyptian and Sudanese] on the ground, we would have immediately announced the news as it is not a secret," Asiri said.

Since March, the Egyptian air force and navy have taken part in the Saudi-led Arab military coalition against Yemen's Houthi rebels, an Iran-backed Shia militant group which had seized large parts of the country.

In August 2015, Egypt extended by six months deployment of troops abroad.
