Four people died on Sunday morning in the Egyptian governorate of Beheira when a truck crashed into a car, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The accident took place on the desert road between the governorate and the capital.

Security officials in the governorate investigated the incident and reported that the truck driver had lost control of his vehicle.

The driver survived, while all four passengers in the car were killed.

Thousands of lives are lost on Egypt's roads every year due to poor driving, badly maintained roads and loose traffic regulations.

According to figures from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), 14,403 road accidents in 2014 led to a total of 6,226 deaths and 24,154 injuries.
