Political party seeks to gain momentum in establishing a permanent Egyptian constitution

The Tagammu Party coordinates a nation-wide signature gathering to push for the establishment of a permanent Egyptian constitution before parliamentary elections

The Tagammu Party commissioned all its members across Egypt to gather signatures of citizens who want a new constitution to be formed before the parliamentary elections.

The political office of Tagammu is seeking to coordinate with other political parties and movements that also want to work on the constitution before elections.

The order itself – perfecting the constitution first versus holding parliamentary elections - is a sticking point in Egyptian political discourse post-revolution.

Many political forces called for the postponement of the parliamentary elections, saying a new constitution must be formed to ensure that the elections won’t be rigged.

The April 6 Youth Movement and leaders of the “We are all Khaled Said” Facebook page (two of the catalysts for Egyptians’ revolt) insist on having a new constitution before the elections.

On the other hand, the Muslim Brotherhood – like all the Islamic forces – believe the elections should take place first, as stipulated by the temporary constitution.
