Skipper Abdel-Wahed El-Sayed said on Tuesday that he would leave Zamalek at the end of the season after his relationship with the club reached a deadend.
The 34-year-old, who has been Zamalek’s regular custodian for over a decade, said he was angry with the treatment he received from fans lately.
"I have decided to quit Zamalek; I can no longer bear the fans’ attackd on me,” El-Sayed told Ahram Online.
"They heavily criticized despite the huge efforts I made with the team this season. I played several times despite being injured.”
El-Sayed came under fire for letting in two soft goals in last week’s 2-2 Cairo derby draw with Ahly, which dealt a serious blow to Zamalek’s hopes of ending their seven-year league drought.
His mis-timed jump allowed Ahly’s forward Mohamad ‘Gedo’ Nagy to make the score 1-1 in the first half, before a low shot from Mauritanian forward Dominique Da Silva went underneath him and into the net in the dying minutes.
“I m not the only one to blame for what happened to Zamalek recently. All the players shoulder responsibility,” he added.
Ahly, Zamalek’s traditional rivals, need just two points from their remaining two league games against Arab Contractors and Maqassa to win a seventh consecutive league title.
