Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi made a "surprise visit" to Alexandria on Sunday to check on efforts to tackle the sewage crisis following heavy rainfall that has devastated the country's second largest city, state-run news agency MENA reported.
The official Facebook page of the president announced that El-Sisi will allocate LE1 billion from the Tahya Misr (Long Live Egypt) fund for the development of the sewage system in Alexandria and Beheira in northern Egypt.
During his visit, El-Sisi also ordered compensation for farmers whose lands have been flooded.
Heavy rains in recent weeks have caused major street flooding in Alexandria and other northern cities, killing a number of people.
It had also led to the resignation of Alexandria's governor Hani El-Messiry.
In early October, El-Messiry had reportedly argued that the city had not undergone any infrastructure development projects for 15 years.
