Among the dead was a seven year old boy; cause of the collapse as yet unknown

A four-storey building collapse left four dead - including a child - and 16 others injured in the city of Fayoum south of Cairo early Sunday.

The reason behind the collapse is yet to be determined, Al-Ahram arabic news website reported.

The buliding collapse in Al-Soufi district in Fayoum also resulted in the partial collapse of an adjoining building.

Head of the Ambulance Authority in Fayoum, Sameh Mohamed, told Al-Ahram that a seven-year-old boy and a 30-year-old were among the casualties.

In a similar incident, early in November, a woman was killed and another injured when a derelict apartment building collapsed in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Building collapses are commonplace in Egypt and are usually due to violations of building specifications, illegal extensions and lax construction.
