Oliveira’s first feature-length film takes place in the old streets of Porto, by the banks of the Douro River. A gang of very young kids has just accepted a new member, Carlitos, a shy boy who has "played it tough" by stealing a doll in a shop. Soon, Carlitos develops feelings for Terezinhau, but he will have to face Eduardo, the “boss”, also in love with the pretty little girl. The latter will not allow any rival to challenge him.

Mastroianni’s last film is loosely based on the experiences of French actor Yves Afonso while shooting a film in Portugal in 1987.
