Egyptian actress Menna Shalabi won the award for best actress in a long feature film at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) for her role in Nawara, a film by Egyptian director Hala Khalil.

Nawara is one of five Egyptian film productions that competed for the DIFF Muhr Awards. The list includes Before the Summer Crowds (Abl Zahmet El Saif), The Curve (Al Munataf), Nawara, The Wheel (El Aglaa) in the Muhr short category, and We have Never Been Kids (Abadan Lam Nakon Atfalan), which won two awards in the Muhr feature category for best director and best nonfeature film.

Nawara is directed by Egyptian Hala Khalil and stars Mahmoud Hemeda and Sherine Reda.

Nawara is set in the wake of the 2011 revolution, centering on a woman in her twenties who works as a housemaid at a villa in a luxury compound.

As the owners flee the politically unstable country, she invites her fiancé over, and together they enjoy a taste of the life of the rich and famous.

The 12th edition of DIFF opened on 9 December and closes today 16 December.
