Egyptian actor Mamdouh Abdel-Aleem passed away Tuesday, head of the Egyptian Actors Syndicate Ashraf Zaki revealed to Ahram Arabic.
Born on 10 June 1956 in Cairo, Abdel-Aleem’s career kicked off during his teenage years when he acted in radio shows and television programmes for children.
He often worked with directors Ebraheem Abdul Galeel, Enaam Mohamed Aly, and Nour Al-Demerdash, who helped bring Abdel-Aleem to step into the limelight by casting him in the popular television series El-ganna Wal-Azraa (The Paradise and the Virgin).
He was soon being offered bigger roles and went on to star in many films, including Batal min warak (1988) directed by Nader Galal, Al-Hob Fi Taba (1992) directed by Ahmed Fouad, and Romantica (1996) directed by Zaki Abdel-Wahab.
As his career thrived, Abdel-Aleem starred in numerous television series, becoming one of the most popular faces for Egyptian households: Seyaam Seyaam (Seyaam’s fasting), Akhou El-banat (The Girls’ brother) Zeinab, El-Hob w Aashya Okhra (Love and other things), and Khalty Safeyya wal-Deir (Aunty Safeyya and the monastery), among others.
Among his best-known work was the television series Layali El-Helmiya (The Nights of Helmiya), a drama that spanned between 1987 and 1995.
In late 2015, it was announced that the series would be revived with new episodes to be screened during the holy month of Ramadan in 2016.
The new episodes, to be directed by Magdy Abu Emeira, were to star a number of the original actors, including Abdel Aleem.
