Egyptian parliamentarian Mostafa Bakry, who earlier announced that he would run for deputy-speaker in the newly-elected parliament, announced on Sunday that he would no longer seek to be elected to the position.  

Sameh Seif El-Yazal, the coordinator of the pro-Sisi coalition In Support of Egypt, said that if Bakry was elected as deputy-speaker he would no longer be a member of the alliance.

Bakry nominated himself as the coalition candidate for the post, though he received less votes than Alaa Abdel-Moniem, who became the In Support of Egypt candidate.

On Saturday after the vote, Bakry announced he would still run for the position, though by Sunday had changed his decision.  

On Sunday, Bakry said that the coalition would only run for the position of the head of parliament.

The coalition does not aim to gain a majority or control over high positions in the House of Representatives, Bakry stressed.

In Support of Egypt, which backs President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, announced last week that MP and constitutional law professor Ali Abdel-Al would likely be elected as the speaker of Egypt's new parliament.

The speaker, as well as two deputies, will be elected during the parliament's first procedural session on Sunday.
