Youssef Chahine’s Awdet El Ibn El Dal (The return of the prodigal son, 1976) will be screened tonight at 10pm at the Hanaguer Theatre, located on the Cairo Opera House grounds.
The screening, organised by the late director's friends and family, is to commemorate the third anniversary of the internationally-acclaimed filmmaker’s third passing.
The film, a joint Egyptian and Algerian production, is loosely based on the novel by the French author Andre Gide, and was classified as a “musical tragedy.” The film is set between Arab-Israeli wars and is regarded as a commentary on the 1967 defeat.
The film was jointly written by Chahine and Salah Jaheen and follows an activist who returns home after spending many years in prison.
