Ahly have reduced the size of their African squad from 30 players to 25, dismissing five players who have made few appearances in the Egyptian Premier league this season so far.

The Cairo giants' coach, Jose Peseiro, excluded striker Ahmed Abdel-Zaher, defender Sherif Hazem, goalie Ahmed Rabie and midfielders Mohamed Zaki and Mohamed Hamdy from the team's final Champions League squad.

The Ahly's final African squad also includes Ghanaian striker John Antwi and midfielder Ahmed El-Sheikh despite their absence from the team's regular squad in domestic games.

Twenty-two-year-old Ghanaian attacker Antwi had previously spent two years in the Egyptian league playing for Ismaily, scoring 28 goals, and joined Ahly last summer for four years from Saudi side Al-Shabab.

Antwi had a flying start, scoring five goals in three games before sustaining an ankle injury against Esperance of Tunisia in a Confederation Cup game last August. After the arrival of new coach Peseiro he missed the team's lineups.

Former Maqassa attacking midfielder Ahmed El-Sheikh joined Ahly last summer but failed to book a place in the team's regular squad and hasn't played in any official games with the team.

Dismissed players Mohamed Zaki, Mohamed Hamdy and Ahmed Abdel-Zaher made few appearances with Ahly this season, coming on as substitutes only during the Egyptian Premier League games.

Ahly, last season's premier league runners-up, will kick off their African Champions League campaign from the 32nd round in March.

They will face the winner of Angolan side Recreativo and Equatorial Guinean Racing de Micomeseng game in the preliminary round.

Ahly's final African squad:

Goalkeepers: Sherif Ekrami, Ahmed Adel, Mosaad Awad

Defenders: Saad Samir, Rami Rabia, Mohamed Naguib, Ahmed Hegazy, Ahmed Fathi, Bassem Ali, Mohamed Hani, Sabri Rahil

Midfielders: Hussein El-Sayed, Hossam Ghaly, Hossam Ashour, Saleh Gomaa, Abdallah El-Saied, Walid Soliman, Ramadan Sobhi, Ahmed El-Sheikh, Ahmed Hamdy
