When the Wafd Party's supreme committee meets on 14 August it will discuss the possibility of leaving the electoral coalition with the Muslim Brotherhood.
“We have asked that the supreme committee revises the coalition between the Wafd Party and the Muslim Brotherhood,” Essam Shiha, member of the Wafd Party's committee, told Ahram Online.
According to Shiha, a wave in the party, which he heads, became opposed to the coalition with the Brotherhood after Islamist groups rallied in Tahrir Square on Friday 29 July, during which they reneged on an agreement with other political groups. The Islamists and Salafists had agreed not to raise any religious calls or banners, but the protest was dominated by religious chants, with even the flag of Saudi Arabia being raised.
The Wafd Party has a history of working with the Brotherhood. The two joined forces during the 1984 parliamentary elections.
