AS Roma boss Luciano Spalletti cited Mohamed Salah’s ankle during the derby league meeting with Lazio in November as the reason behind the Egypt ace's recent dip in form.

After a fine start to his Roma career, Salah was hindered by a niggling ankle injury that sidelined him for four weeks after managing six goals in 14 games since his switch from English reigning champions Chelsea.

He has struggled to replicate his early form ever since, having featured in six Serie A games without registering a goal or an assist.

"He's been affected by his injury," Spalletti said at a media conference. "He hasn't rediscovered his brilliance and inspiration again.

"The first thing he has to do is beat his man- that's his thing.

"He [Salah] is good with the ball at his feet. We're working on his positioning."

Salah, who was impressive during a six-month loan stint at Fiorentina last season, joined Roma in the summer on a three-year deal.
