German coach Felix Magath has turned down an offer to take charge of Ahly's football team for what he described as 'political unrest' in Egypt.

Ahy sought to appoint Magath, winner of three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg, as a replacement for Portuguese Jose Peseiro, who resigned to take charge of Porto.

The Cairo giants announced earlier this week that they were in advanced talks with the 62-year-old.

"The situation is not stable in Egypt," Magath told German newspaper BILD on Tuesday.

"Karl Heinz Feldkamp, Dixie Dörner, Reiner Hollmann, Rainer Zobel worked in Egypt but it was in another time."

German coaches Reiner Hollmann and Rainer Zobel helped Ahly win several titles in the 1990s.

Abdel-Aziz Abdel-Shafi 'Zizo', a club icon, is in charge of Egypt and Africa's most popular club on an interim basis.
