An exhibition titled "Building an Alternative Film Archive,” curated by Cimatheque-Alternative Film Centre, is scheduled to open at K Project Space on 6 March.

“A key tenet in Cimatheque's approach to the archive is understanding that the true measure of a society's vitality lies in works created on its margins,” according to the event’s Facebook page.

Considering that “a physical space wherein the public can view and actively engage with alternative film history has been lacking,” Cimatheque seeks to respond to this gap by unearthing the “plethora of cinematic material entirely neglected by public memory.”

Through this exhibition, Cimatheque therefore aims to trigger questions regarding its “role as a space at this moment in time, and its aim in developing alternative approaches to archiving Egypt's visual legacy.”

Cimatheque was inaugurated in May 2015 as a platform for filmmakers and film lovers alike. Its archival collection includes material from commercial Egyptian cinema, advertisements, as well as amateur footage, home videos and independent films, and even unedited newsreels and documentaries.
