The collaborative group Cairo Bats reveal Act 1: The Roof, opening on 15 March, the first in a series of projects to be held at CIC dedicated to the presentation of Cairo based art projects with a special focus on collaboration.
Cairo Bats (Khafafeesh El-Qahira) is a collective of Cairo-based female artists.
The group has been active for two years and currently involves artists Mai Al Shazly, Yvonne Buchheim, Magdalena Kallenberger, Hagar Masoud, Nadia Mounier and Omneia Naguib.
According to the exhibit’s statement, “they stage photographs through playful interactions in semi-public spaces.
Act 1: The Roof is the group’s first exhibition and presents a series of photographs taken over the course of two years on rooftops.
“In the images the members of the group act as the cast set in scene on this urban stage equivalent to improvisational theatre.”
Taking turns in front of and behind the camera, in their staged photos they create and respond to their surroundings on the rooftops, incorporating objects they have found such as rugs, furniture and buckets.
Some of the themes in their work explore absence and presence, and the play of visibility versus invisibility.
Programme:
The exhibition opens on 15 March at 7pm and runs until 9 April
CIC, 22 Abd El-Khalek Tharwat street, Downtown, Cairo
