France says it respects Egypt's decision not to accept election monitors

MENA, Thursday 18 Aug 2011

France’s ministry of foreign affairs said that it respects the decision by the Egyptian cabinet of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf not to invite international bodies to monitor upcoming parliamentary elections that are set to take place in November.

In recent weeks, officials in the European Union have expressed their readiness to send monitors to help Egypt conduct its first post-Mubarak elections.

Today, Christian Vag, a spokesperson for the French ministry told reporters that Egypt’s decision is a matter of ‘national sovereignty’. Vag added that the French government trusts that the upcoming elections in Egypt will be fair and transparent.
