Kawkab El-Shark (“The Star of the East”) ensemble — the name is a reference to the appellation given to the late Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum — will perform during the ongoing 22nd edition of Fes Festival of World Sacred Music.

Kawkab El-Shark was founded in 2014 by musicians from the Cairo Opera House, focusing on songs performed by Egypt's iconic artist who died in 1974.

The ensemble will perform on 13 May at one of the festival's main stages in Bab Al Makina. The evening will feature singers Hasnaa from Morocco alongside Egyptian talents: Rehab Motawaa and Rehab Omar.

Organised annually, the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music aims at bringing together different facets of spiritual music and performances from all around the world.

Apart from Egyptian performers, this year's rich line-up will also include artists from several other Arab countries.

The special focus of the festival's 22nd edition is India.
