Years of occupation may change maps, but they can hardly touch the memories of those who cherish their heritage and use the act of remembrance as a genuine form of resistance. After all, those who cherish their memories, behold everything in this life.

In her book, The Art of Palestinian Embroidery (1999), Leila El-Khalidi documents the art of embroidery and authentic stitches that were well kept in Palestinian homes, museums, official and personal individual archives. This book was compiled mainly between 1972-1983 during her stay in Lebanon. "I began with my own embroidery work in 1975."

Pre-1948 Palestinian costumes and Palestinian artworks in general were well displayed by and among the Rockefeller museum in Jerusalem, the British Museum of Mankind in London and the Pergamon in Berlin. According to the book, the earliest forms of the holy land embroidered cross stitch can be dated to around the 11th century.
