A Giza criminal court acquitted on Sunday businessman Salah Diab and 10 others on charges of illegal assembly and the possession of unlicensed weapons.

The court also sentenced two defendants in the same case to one year in prison and another to six months.

Diab's defence team, which includes prominent lawyers Farid El-Deeb and Fathy Serour, attended the court session.

In November 2015, Diab and his son Tawfik were arrested from his villa in Giza over charges of possessing unlicensed firearms after security forces stormed his house on orders from the prosecution following a fight next to his villa, according to his family lawyer El-Deeb.

In 2004, the businessman co-founded El-Masry El-Youm newspaper, currently Egypt's largest privately-owned daily.
