Touareg band Kel Assouf and Sudanese singer and percussionist Asia Madani will deliver a concert at Cairo’s El-Genaina Theatre on 18 June as part of this year’s Hayy Festival.
Kel Assouf (Nigeria/Brussels) is a five-member rock band that was founded in 2006 in Brussels and whose music “represents nostalgia, eternity and the solitude of the desert through a unique mixture between African rhythms and rock music,” reads the press release by El-Genaina Theatre.
The band’s line-up comprises Anana Harouna (vocals, guitar), Toulou Kiki (vocals, percussions), Sofyann Ben Youssef (keys, guitar), Mathieu Mirol (bass), and Olivier Penu (drums).
Their debut album Tin Hinane, which was named after one of the Touareg Queens, was released in 2010 and was followed by their second album, Tikounen, in 2016.
Also performing on the night will be the Sudanese singer and percussionist Asia Madani.
Madani was born and lived in Wad Madani in east central Sudan, before moving to Egypt in 2000 where she built a repertoire encompassing Sudanese folklore, as well as her own songs.
Madani has collaborated with an array of Egyptian musicians, and attended workshops with different artists from the west, east and Africa.
Hayy is an annual festival that was first founded during Ramadan in 2005, with a diverse line-up of artistic events, including music performances, Sufi chanting concerts, poetry recitals, circus and puppet shows and more, setting the tone for a series of dynamic and evolving editions over the following years.
The annual festival celebrated Ramadan with artistic events that reflect the multi-layered nature of Egyptian cultural heritage, featuring acts from Cairo, the Nile Delta, Upper Egypt and Suez, among others.
