Cairo's Ramadan weekend with culture: 16-18 June

Ramadan evenings are very refreshing when infused with arts and culture activities. Ahram Online highlights a few events which will take place during the weekend

Thursday 16 June

Fete de la Musique (World Music Day) at Al Azhar park, at 8pm

The event will include performances by Al Darb Al Ahmar Art School and Oscarisme studio followed by the duo Telepoetic. The Egyptian Project will also perform afterwards, presenting their music from students of the Cairo Conservatoire with the French artist Jérôme Ettinger. The concert on the big stage will host the two rock bands, the Egyptian Massar Egbari and French band Baden Baden. Read more here

Storytelling in Fatimid Cairo, at 9pm

Performance by Mohamed El-Saeidy. The event is part of the extensive Ramadan programme organised by the Cutural Development Fund across its many venues.

Syrian Inshad band at El-Ghoury Dome, at 9.30pm

Maqamat Rawheya Nights: El-Maraashly, Syrian Inshad band.

Mawaweel Festival at Darb 1718, at 10pm

Nas Makan and Sharmoofers.

The event is part of Darb 1718's Ramadan evenings with music.

Friday 17 June

Standup comedy at the heart of Fatimid Cairo, at 9pm

Comedy Night with The Xes.

Al-Rabaa Cultural Centre, Fatimid Cairo - El-Gamaleya, Moezz Street, next to Aqmar Mosque, at 9pm 

Beethoven's choral work at Basilique Cathédrale, at 9pm

Cairo Celebration Choir, conducted by Nayer Nagui, will perform Egypt premiere of Beethoven's Mass in C major and Zur Namensfeier overture. Read more here

Mohamed Mohsen at the Cairo Opera House, at 9.30pm

Open air theatre. The event is part of the Opera's Ramadan programme

An evening to commemorate Egyptian documentary filmmaker Nabeeha Lotfy

The event will include a music concert and the screening of a documentary film directed by Eliane Raheb about Lotfy's life.

Saturday 18 June

Kel Assouf and Asia Madani at El-Genaina theatre, ar 9.30pm

Classical music with an oriental flair and a beloved piano concerto, at 9.30pm

Cairo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hisham Gabr will perform A. Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, Rachmaninov’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No 2 in C minor op. 18 and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Antar” Symphonic Suite op. with the piano soloist Elena Dzamashvili. Read more here

El-Tanoura at Wekalet Al-Ghoury, at 9.30pm

Traditional troupe performance. The event is part of the extensive Ramadan programme organised by the Cutural Development Fund across its many venues.

Al-Ghoury Complex, Fatimid Cairo

Mawaweel Festival at Darb 1718, at 10pm

El Nafikha band. The event is part of Darb 1718's Ramadan evenings with music.

In English El-Nafikha meaning ‘blowers’. The band presents an amalgam of musical genres and creative rearrangements of heritage music. The band’s line-up includes: Mohamed Sawwah, Amir Ibrahim, Waleed Gabr, Ahmed Ismail, Masky, Khaled ElSayes and Sameh Shaaban.
