The American University in Cairo released a statement today about the French academic denied entry at Cairo Airport last Friday.
According to the statement, Marie Edmee Josettte Duboc is a French scholar and AUC academic who arrived in Egypt with her daughter on a private visit to see her husband. He is currently a visiting assistant professor at the Middle East Studies Center.
Duboc, the statement said, was expected to join her husband and begin work as an assistant professor of sociology at AUC in January 2012. The statement also revealed that Duboc is a published scholar whose research interests have included labour movements in Egypt.
“In anticipation of her arrival in January, the University applied for a work permit on her behalf in July but has not yet been able to obtain this authorisation,” the statement read.
“AUC knows of no reason why she might be denied entry into the country and continues to work closely with government representatives to see whether a work permit can be secured for her in time for her to take up her teaching post for the spring semester.”
On Saturday, Duboc was denied entry into Egypt and deported to Paris with her daughter after being told that her name was on the airport security's list individuals banned from entering the country.
