Reactions to the death of iconic Egyptian director Mohamed Khan

Many renowned figures from Egyptian and international cinema as well as the cultural scene reacted to Mohamed Khan's passing on 26 July

Reacting to the news of the death of Mohamed Khan, one of Egypt's most prominent filmmakers, Arab celebrities expressed their loss and mourning of the cinematic icon.

“I was shocked to hear about the loss of a giant in cinema directing. Mohamed Khan influenced many generations and changed the face of cinema in Egypt.” -Director and critic Ahmed Hassouna.

“A knight.” -Filmmaker Amir Ramsis.

“And so it was that Khan lives in the heart of the summer crowd,” -actor Sabry Fawaz, referencing the name of Khan’s last film Before the Summer Crowds.

“Good bye professor.” -Actress Saba Mubarak.

“We lost an icon of Egyptian Cinema, and one of the most important and finest directors.” -Actress Wafaa Amer.

“Shocking and sad news. God rest your soul.” -Jordanian director Mais Darwazah.

“And we learned to love cinema…” -Filmmaker Ahmed Abdalla.



“I remember the moment I decided to start directing I had read an interview where Mohamed Khan was saying that every person has the right to direct because everyone sees the world in his own way.” -Filmmaker Mohamed Diab.

“Khan excelled in presenting a realistic panorama and a rich social, political and humanistic record of Egyptian society in a simple manner.” -Minister of Culture Helmy El-Namnam.

“I never imagined relating sadness with Mohamed Khan. Farewell.” –Actor Asser Yassin.

“Thank you truly…We are grateful.” -BBC presenter Rasha Kandil.

“God rest the soul of director Mohamed Khan and give patience to his family and his fans. I’ve been recently reading his last book which contains all his articles and I’ve learned a lot from him.” -Amir Eid of Cairokee band.

“Arabic cinema lost one of its icons who dedicated their life to presenting serious and impressive cinema.” -Saudi poet Zayed Alrwais. 



Several art and culture institutions also expressed their sadness at the loss of Khan:

"Cairo International Film Festival mourns with deep sorrow the late filmmaker Mohammad Khan, one of the most prominent directors of Egyptian cinema." -Cairo International Film Festival.

“We mourn the loss of one of the greatest creators of joy in our history.”- The Egyptian National Library and Archives in Cairo.

“It is with great sadness that we learnt of the sudden loss of iconic Egyptian film director, Mohamed Khan. RIP.” -Arab British Center in The UK.

“Egyptian-Pakistani Director Mohamed Khan left our world. Known as the Master of realism in cinema,” -Royal Film Commission in Jordan.

“We have a lot to thank him for.” -BBC Arabic Festival.
