Spotlight on animation in new Panoranimation section at Egypt's 9th Panorama of the European Film

Ahram Online , Monday 31 Oct 2016

35 animated films will be screened across three venues

One of this year's new additions is the Panoranimation section, brining feature length and short animated films from more than 10 European countries, showcasing various motion styles and techniques.

Acccording to Panorama's website, the section joins in with the annual screenings by the French Cultural Network Abroad and its partners, which every year celebrate animated films for a month during October with public screenings and discussions for audiences of all ages.

Panoranimation includes three feature length animations films, and three short film programmes as sub sections.

The feature length selections are two recent ones from 2015 and 2016, the Irish film Song of The Sea by Tomm Moore, and the French film Louise by The Shore by Jean-François Laguionie, in addition to the iconic 1926 German silhouette animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed by Lotte Reiniger and Carl Koch.

The three subsections include screenings of short animations programs from Germany, Italy and France.

The 17th Annual Animation Show of Shows from Stuttgart includes 12 shorts from eight countries that range from three to 16 minutes running time.

Launched in 1998 by Ron Diamond, the Filmworks founder is also curator of the programme -- The Animation Show of Shows – who will select the year's best animated short films from the world’s top animation festivals to present them at the major animation studios and to industry professionals to inspire animators and directors.

Ranging in technique between hand-drawn, paint on glass and stop-motion, to the latest computer-generated imagery, the films include Academy Award winners and nominees, as well as films that have won major prizes at international film festivals.

The second programme comes from the Italian National Film School – Animation Center of Torino, bringing 11 selected films produced between 2008 and 2015.

The film school, also known as Centro Sperimentale Di Cinematografia (Experimental film centre), has its headquarters in Rome where it was founded in 1935 and is the oldest film school in Western Europe for the art and technique of cinema, including animation.

The third programme is from France's Annecy International Animated Film Festival, screening nine films that have won the Young Jury award, including films between 2011 and 2014.

The annual festival dates back to the 1960s and has run for 56 years to date, and has continued to grow to currently feature the International Animation Film Market (Mifa) as well.
