‘A Strange Love Affair with Ego’ (The Netherlands, 2015) will screen at Cairo’s NVIC on Sunday 20 November.
Directed by Ester Gould, this 90-minute long personal visual essay “explores our society’s increasing obsession with the self” by following a group of successful people as they go about their daily lives, “going out, socialising and participating in the art world, [and] as they reflect in conversations or interviews on the level of self-confidence they display and how this relates to their actual “self.”
Gould juxtaposes these scenes with reenactments that tell the story of her sister Rowan, whose self-confidence Gould was always inspired by.
The documentary scooped the Best Dutch Documentary Award at the 2016 IDFA Festival, where it was celebrated as “beautifully photographed, experimental but masterful.”
Programme:
Sunday 20 November, 7.30pm
