Antiquities Minister Khaled El-Enany will attend the inauguration of a traditional crafts fair to be held in Cairo’s city of the dead on Tuesday.
Mohamed Abdel Aziz, director general of Historic Cairo Rehabilitation Project, told Ahram Online that the fair will put on show a collection of the work of traditional craftsmen, mostly those living and working in the City of the Dead as well as those of Egyptian and international contemporary artists and non-profit organisations across Historic Cairo which promote art and culture.
The event, “Sultan's Fair: Between Old and New” is part of a new project, “Outside In: The Art of Inclusion - A Place for Arts and Culture in Cairo's City of the Dead," which is being funded by the EU delegation to Egypt and implemented by Cairo-based Archinos Architecture, in cooperation with the Historic Cairo Project.
It will be held in the the Sultan Qayet Bay area of the City of the Dead.
According to Abdel Aziz, the ultimate objective of the project is to make culture and art better accessible to the community of this neighbourhood.
The City of the Dead, or Cairo Necropolis, is an Islamic necropolis below the Mokattam hills in southeastern Cairo.
