Activists in Egypt and Tunisia are to hold protests in solidarity with Egyptian blogger Alaa Abd El-Fattah, who the military prosecution on Sunday ordered be detained for 15 days pending investigations.

The first march will be begin at 7pm on Monday at Talaat Harb Square in Downtown Cairo and proceed to the Appeals Prison in the Bab El-Louk district where Abd El-Fattah is being held. A parallel protest will be held at the same time in front of the northern military zone in Alexandria.

Abd El-Fattah’s detention has caused ripples all the way to Tunisia, with Tunisian activists vowing to protest on Monday in front of the Egyptian embassy to demand his release.

Abd El-Fattah, along with his wife Manal Hussein, is one of Egypt’s pioneer bloggers. Since 2004 they have been writing their well-known political blog www.manalaa.net.

The blogger was summoned to the military prosecution headquarters to face charges of inciting violence during the 9 October Maspero clashes between mostly Coptic-Christian protesters and military police. He is also being charged with assaulting military personnel and stealing a weapon from the armed forces.
